They say that bad news sells more newspapers than good news, so perhaps it is unfortunate that I am opening our first newsletter with some good news…
We are certainly living in interesting times… governments are injecting billions into the world economy, borrowing is as cheap as it has been for a lifetime (I remember paying 14.5% in the recession of 1992), energy and other commodity prices have dropped back from a somewhat hysterical upsurge in price and in a matter of months the revenue streams that we are earning in the USA and Europe have increased in value by 25% for the same amount of work.
At a more immediate level Agency Software Worldwide Ltd. is having an exceptionally good year with a record for new business in Q3, a very successful recruitment campaign and some very significant product developments.
But in spite of the “never had it so good” scenario, it will not have escaped your notice that we are all under a big cloud. The business community has collectively decided that the malaise caused by “corrections” in a few sectors has developed into self-fulfilling gloom and recession.
For reasons that I cannot fully explain, ASW has so far been remarkably unaffected by the downturn and I am pleased to say that the majority of our clients to whom I have spoken are in the same position. What is worrying us all is the expectation of worse things to come, and yet when you look around at the fundamentals of our business environment and the economy as a whole, how can it be so bad? Surely the next “correction” is likely to be a significant upswing.
